ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the first time in school history, Carson-Newman has put more than 130 student athletes on the South Atlantic Conference's Commissioner's Honor Roll in back-to-back academic years.
The Eagles followed up last year's school-record total 136 with 133 honorees this academic year.
"Our first obligation when we think of student athletes is to think of the student," Carson-Newman Director of Athletics Allen Morgan said. " Their dedication reflects well on the field, which we believe also translates well back to the classroom. Our goal is to produce great students who are also athletes."
To be eligible for inclusion on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, student-athletes must have competed in a sponsored championship sport and maintained a cumulate GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the academic year.
"SAC student-athletes are among the most well-rounded individuals on their respective campuses," said South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz. "I'm extremely proud of the efforts made by our student-athletes and support staffs in making 2015-16 another record-breaking year in the classroom. We had 226 more honorees this year than in 2014-15 so I think it's safe say our vision of preparing our student-athletes academically as well as athletically is a reality."
Carson-Newman's 133 honorees were a part of a record-setting year for the league as well. 1,555 student-athletes, spanning each of the South Atlantic Conference's 12 member institutions and 18 sports, were named to the 2015-16 SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The number of honorees represents an increase of 226 student-athletes from last year's list.
Queens led the South Atlantic Conference with 164 student-athletes on the honor roll. Tusculum finished second with 158 honorees. In third was Lenoir-Rhyne with 148, followed by Newberry with 142. Lincoln Memorial's 134 student-athletes was good for No. 5. Carson-Newman and Wingate each put 133 student-athletes on the list, while Catawba placed 122 honorees. Anderson (117), Mars Hill (111), Coker (109), and Brevard (88) rounded out the list.
In terms of raw numbers, football and baseball led the way with 17 selections, each. Women's track/cross country followed with 14, and volleyball with 12.
In terms of percentages, the volleyball program saw 75 percent of its roster lauded with its 12 selections. Women's golf had 66 percent of its team honored with six members receiving the accolade. The women's basketball team also had 66 percent of its team recognized with 10 players achieving a 3.3 GPA out of a 15-person roster.
