Upset of the Year

Men's Soccer vs. No. 5 L-R

The fifth-ranked Bears came to Mossy Creek with a 4-0 record to face an Eagles squad that had just completed back-to-back clean sheets for a 3-1-1 record. In the 32nd minute, Tobias Solem Karlsen split through two L-R defenders with a header to gain control on a pass from Samuel Jenkins to place a shot up near post for the lone goal of the game, marking Karlsen's fourth goal of the season at that point. That night was the first time since Oct. 22, 2016 that the Bears were on the losing end of a shutout, recording clean sheets in their first three games of 2017. The C-N defense held Ismael Noumansana, the 2016 SAC Player of the Year, to just four shots, the most of any L-R player in the game. It was the second time this season that the senior had no shots on goal in a match. The victory marked the first over a top-5 opponent since 2013 when they Eagles took a 2-1 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight win over No. 4 Rollins to advance to the National Semifinals.

Women's Basketball vs. No. 15 Lander

In the South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Conference Challenge against No. 15 Lander on Nov. 11, Kayla Marosites posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Mika Wester added 28 points to propel Carson-Newman to a 90-87 win. The Lady Eagles shot 57 percent overall from the field while making 10 of 17 from the three-point line.

Football vs. No. 23 Catawba

Behind a dominant defensive effort and a bruising running game, Carson-Newman pounded out a 31-18 victory in week five at Burke-Tarr Stadium over the 23rd-ranked Catawba College Catawba Indians. The Eagles tallied a season high 333 yards rushing behind a forceful two-tight end attack against the conference's top defense.  The total yards rushing are also the most that the Eagles have gained on Catawba since Curtis Walker took over the Indians' program in 2013. As opposed to the previous  two weeks, which were highlighted by second half miscues, the Eagles kept their foot on the accelerator after halftime. Carson-Newman became the first team this season to score on Catawba in the third quarter. The Eagles did it twice.

Volleyball vs. Anderson

In the South Atlantic Conference Tournament semifinals at Holt Fieldhouse on Nov. 17, Carson-Newman was on the ropes against regular season champion Anderson. Down 20-13 in the fourth set on the brink of elimination, fourth-seeded Carson-Newman scored 12 of the final 13 points before posting a .529 attack percentage in the fifth set to upend top-seeded Anderson 18-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-21 and 15-10. Dave Franklin's team never trailed in the fifth set starting the game off on a 5-1 spurt. Back-to-back smashes from Marnie Streeter sealed a semifinal win for the Eagles. Offensively, Streeter had the best night of her career pounding out a career-high 24 kills while picking up 10 digs. Anna Patton handed out 43 assists with seven digs and two rejections while Morgan Ballard had 26 scoops.
