Stepp, Chapman shine in High Jump at East Tennessee Classic

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Men and Women's Track and Field teams had two athletes who stood out amongst several Division I Universities at the Eastern Tennessee Classic this weekend.

Freshman Tanner Stepp, and Sophomore Kristin Chapman provisionally qualified for the NCAA Track and Field Championships as a result of their outstanding performances at ETSU.

Chapman finished in third-place in the women's high jump, beating out several Division I athletes in her respective event.

Stepp, who was named the Bojangles Athlete of the Week last week after beating the Carson-Newman school record in high jump, finished second at ETSU with a leap of 2.13 meters (6'11 3/4"), resetting his own school record in the high jump.

"Our goal as a program is to compete on a national level, regardless of division. Tanner's performance is proof that this is a reality," head coach David Needs said.

With his results, Stepp improves his overall school record from 2.11-2.13 meters.

"He wasn't intimidated by the strong field and will only continue to improve." Needs said about the true freshman.

The Eagles continue their season back in Johnson City for the East Tennessee Invitational in February.
