Eagles finish in top two teams overall after a successful day at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. ­– The Carson-Newman men and women's track and field teams finished in first and second place, respectively at the conclusion of the Tiger Indoor Invitational Saturday. The Eagles dominated in both sprinting and field events, with at least one athlete placing Top 3 in 15 of the 21 events in which Carson-Newman participated.

Five athletes finished in first-place in their respective events: TJ Davis (Ooltewah, Tenn.) in the men's long jump, Kristin Chapman in the women's high jump, Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.) in the men's high jump, Randall Freeman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) in the men's shot put, and Tori Gaul (Salisbury, NC.) the women's 400 meter dash. 

Several athletes also found themselves moving up in regional rankings, and beating both personal and C-N records.

"Nice to see people climb up in the regional standings. Especially the women's team." Head track and field Coach David Needs said, "We tried to put some people in different events today and they showed they [were] not afraid of competing."

Gaul's 59.96 second finish in the 400 Meter Dash moves her to seventh in the region. She also finished in second-place in the women's pole vault (3.05m).

In the women's triple jump, Tiana Mills' 11.17m leap not only set a new Carson-Newman record, it also moved her to fourth-place in the region. Mills also finished in second in the women's long jump marking at 5.27. Samantha Grudger (Bristol, Tenn.) finished in third-place with a leap of 5.09.

TJ Davis earned the second-place in the men's triple jump as well; with sophomore Christian Robinson finishing close behind with a mark of 13.03m. In the men's long jump, Jason Williams finished in second-place after a mark of 6.77 (22'2.5")

Senior Jessica Azor finished in second-place in the women's shot put with her 11.29m throw.

In men's sprinting events, Darius Childs earned second in the men's 55 Meter hurdles with a 8.04 second finish. In the men's 55 meter dash, Noah Hill, Jason Williams and TJ Davis finished in third, fourth and fifth-place, respectively. Ray Tiller earned third-place in the men's 400 meter dash.

Shauntae Miller earned third in the women's 200 Meter dash after her 27.07 second finish.

The women's 4x400 Meter team of Gaul, Martino, Pickel and Miller finished in second-place with a time of 4:20.26. The men's team of Jackson, Robinson, Tiller and Seward finished in second as well, with a time of 3:38.11.

The Eagles each finished in the top-two teams of the meet overall. The women, second-place with 98 points, and the men finishing in first-place, with 112 points. The greatest amount either team has earned so far this year. 

Tthe Eagles head back to Tar Heel State for the Appalachian State Indoor meet next weekend.
