Eagles ranked in latest USTFCCCA Southeast regional rankings

NEW ORLEANS – In the fourth regional rankings released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the Carson-Newman track and field teams are both represented on the list.

The men's team is placed eighth after jumping from 11th-place in the last rankings and the women sit in fifth-place after moving up six spots.

This is the highest-ranking for the men's team since April 24, 2014 when the team was ranked sixth in the Southeast Region.

Over the weekend, the Eagles competed in the Tiger Indoor Invitational hosted by Sewanee. The men won the meet, while the women finished in second. In the midstate, Carson-Newman claimed a top-three ranking in 15 of the 21 events.

Sophomores Tiana Mills and Kristin Chapman have both provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Nationals. Mills is qualified in the long jump with a jumping reaching 5.75m (18'10.5") in length, while Chapman is qualified in the high jump with a leap of five-feet, six-inches. Freshman Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.) is qualified in men's high jump with a jump of 2.11 meters, which was high enough for another provisional NCAA Championship spot.

Two teams from the South Atlantic Conference sit atop in the women's standings. Queens is first and Wingate is placed second. Anderson and Mars Hill are also ranked regionally. On the men's side, Queens is ranked second, while Wingate and Lenior-Rhyne are placed right ahead of the Eagles in sixth and seventh-place respectively.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is the non-profit professional organization that represents men's and women's cross country and track & field coaches in the United States. The organization represents over 8,000 coaching members, including 91% of NCAA coaches. USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a lobbyist for coaches' interests, and working as a liaison between the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track & field.
