JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Freshman Tanner Stepp, (Jefferson City, TN) recently ranked sixth in the nation in the men's high jump, heads to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships Friday.

The Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships only selects the top sixteen athletes in each event from across the entire country.

Coach David Needs said, "To be selected already means you are pretty special."

As the lone Carson-Newman representative at the national meet, Stepp plans to put the pressure on the other athletes he is competing with. "I'm just going to go out [today] like it's any other track meet and do what I've done all year," Stepp said.

Having last weekend off gave the freshman an opportunity to recover, and mentally prepare for this weekend.

"I think that it is an honor to represent Carson-Newman this week and I hope to show everyone that Carson-Newman Track and Field is the real deal." Stepp said.

Needs said, "Tanner has shown the season that he deserves to be here.  He will represent us well."

The championships will be held at the  Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Friday and tomorrow. You can watch the action take place here. Full results will be available on cneagles.com following the competition.
