ROME, GA – Even on a day where the temperatures didn't reach past a brisk 52 degrees, the Carson-Newman men and women's track and field teams dug deep and persevered to the finish at the 2015 Shorter Invitational at Shorter University.
"When weather makes the circumstances of competition tough you get a great idea of who your elite performers are," coach David Needs said. "Because they not only improve, but they fight to be first."
Not only did Tori Gaul (Salisbury, NC), finish in first-place in the women's pole vault (3.04m), and 400 m hurdles (1:03.93), the freshman also broke both school records in each respective event.
Sophomore TJ Davis (Ooltewah, Tenn.) finished in second-place in the men's long jump, but was the highest collegiate finisher of the outdoor meet. The first-place finisher competed unattached.
"We had several solid finishes and some people who showed what their heart looked [truly] looked like, people like Anna Bauder, Randall Freeman, Ray Tiller and Jessica Azor," Needs said.
Bauder competed in various women's sprinting events including the women's 100, 200m dash. Senior Jessica Azor competed in several women's field events for the Eagles. Randall Freeman finished in third-place in the men's discus throw, after a 43.16m throw. The senior also competed in both the men's shot put and javelin throw. Tiller, a mid-distance runner for the Eagles, competed in the men's 400 m dash.
"They stayed busy all day, providing us great leadership and showing tremendous determination," Needs explained.
