JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men and women's track and field teams had athletes competing in both the University of the Cumberlands Invitational in Williamsburg, Ky. and the Tennessee Relays held at the University of Tennessee amongst numerous Division 1 athletes.
"To go two meets and split the team up the week before conference is a challenge for team and coaches," coach David Needs explained.
The Eagles had many great performances this weekend at each respective meet. At the Tennessee Relays Saturday, sophomore Kristin Chapman earned sixth place in the women's high jump after her 1.65m jump (5'05"). Sophomore Tiana Mills earned 10th-place in the women's long jump after her 5.39m leap into the sand pit.
"Both meets featured excellent teams and excellent competition," Needs said.
At the University of Cumberlands, sophomore Jason Williams finished in first-place in the men's long jump, with senior Randall Freeman following close behind in fourth after his 6.20m leap.
Athletes like Darius Childs and Freeman had season bests as they competed at both the UT and the Cumberlands meets. "[It] shows how dedicated and determined they are," Needs said of the two seniors.
Darius Childs earned third place in the men's 110m hurdles after his 15.07 finish. In other men's sprinting events, freshman Lachlan Dickie finished in fourth place (15:39.87). The men's 4x800m Relay team of Colin Smith, Luke Greer, Josh Marsh and Mark Edwards finished in fifth-place (9:03.90).
From the women's end: in sprinting events, the 4x800 m Relay team of Aiyana Martino, Sarah Sharp, Duncan Sparks, and Madison Pickel earned fifth-place after their 11:01.10 finish. Freshman Gabrielle Fewell competed in the women's 400m hurdles and finished in 1:08.40, giving her third-place. Shauntae Miller finished in fifth place in the women's 200m dash.
"Having some strong showings at both meets gives us something to build on," Needs said.
