Stepp to compete for national high jump crown Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman freshman high jumper Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.) hits the field in Allendale, Mich. At host-site Grand Valley State to compete at the NCAA Track and Field National meet Saturday.

Stepp garnered All-America honors in the discipline earlier this year during indoor season with a fifth place finish at nationals.

"Tanner Stepp is happy to be healthy again," head coach David Needs said. "After battling nagging injuries the last four weeks of the season, he able to get a good jump in at Virginia Tech/Roanoke qualifier.

"Jumps coach Tyler Stepp likes how strong Tanner looks now. His preparation all season has been gearing toward this moment. It is an incredible field of jumpers including the best high jumper in any division from Texas A&M Kingsville. Tanner is up to the challenge."

Stepp is seeded 13^th with four other jumpers who have leaps of 2.12 meters. Just 0.02 meters separate Stepp from the athlete seeded sixth. Jeron Robinson of Texas A&M Kingsville has the best jump of the year for any athlete in the NCAA.

With a jump of 2.31 meters, Robinson is the top seed for the event by 0.15 meters.
