JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—Three Carson-Newman track and field athletes made the trip over to the Tar heel State to compete in the High Point University VertKlasse Meeting over the weekend.
The athletes included Marshall Shank (Granite Quarry, N.C.), Tori Gaul (Salisbury, N.C.) and Shauntae Miller (Nassau, Bahamas). Shank and Gaul competed in the pole vault events while Miller took part in the women's 400m dash Saturday morning.
After just missing out on a provisional qualification at the Shorter Invitational on March 26 while breaking a 45-year-old program record in the process, Shank returned to action Saturday. The freshman finished the day with a 4.47m mark which was good enough for fourth-place overall.
Gaul, who was coming off a second-place finish at the Shorter Invitational, finished the day with a third-place showing of 3.81m out of 12 participants.
Miller rounded out the crew by competing in the 400m dash. The senior completed the race in 59.21 seconds which was good enough for a 12th-place finish.
The High Point University VertKlasse Meeting featured teams from all over the region and from different levels of competition. Division I schools were also present over the weekend as C-N athletes finished high than some participants from Virginia Tech, Liberty, Appalachian State and Eastern Carolina.
The entire Carson-Newman track and field team will be back in action at the Tennessee Relays on April 7.
