Williamsburg, Ky.— The Carson-Newman outdoor track and field team competed at the University of the Cumberlands Track & Field Invitational Saturday for its third outdoor meet of the season.
"It wasn't the best day for competition due to the cold temperatures and wind speeds that were blowing inward during most of our running events, but I was proud of the way the team competed and worked to get better," coach David Needs said following the meet. "A lot of our guys maybe won or performed well in their events but didn't get the times or marks they were looking for. Sarah Sharp, Madison Pickel and the entire 4 X 100m women's relay team had a good day today."
Sarah Sharp (Lewis Center, Ohio) tallied a top-10 finish on the day as the sophomore completed the women's 800m run with a seventh-place time of 2:24.22. Madison Pickel (Sevierville, Tenn.) wrapped up the women's 200m and 400m runs with third-place finishes of 27.24 seconds and 1:00.71 times.
Pickel was also a part of Carson-Newman's women's 4 X 100m relay team that picked up a second-place time of 50.51 seconds. The junior combined efforts with Cassie Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.), Samantha Gudger (Bristol, Tenn.) and Cassie Kawalski (Salisbury, N.C.) to produce the second-best time of the meet after running together for the first time in their respected careers.
Gudger competed in a team-high five events on the day and placed top-10 in each, including three second-place tallies.
The Bristol, Tenn. native finished second in the long and high jumps following leaps of 4.99m and 1.52m and also just missed out on a first-place showing in the 4 X 400m relay with the second-place nod.
Junior Tiana Mills (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the long jump with a 5.13m mark and placed second in the triple jump following an 11.47m placement.
On the men's side, Christian Stumpf (Johnson City, Tenn.) recorded a first-place showing in the men's high jump. The freshman completed the event with a 1.88m mark. Timontrez Eady (Duval County, Fla.) also tallied a win on Saturday with a 6.82m leap in the men's long jump.
Lachlan Dickie (Knoxville, Tenn.) also put forth a first-place showing on the day with a 32:06.68 time in the men's 10,000m run. The time broke a 33-year-old Carson-Newman record set by Johnny Sharp in 1983.
All in all, Carson-Newman tallied 23 top-five finishes on a day where Mother Nature made her presence known with the dwindling temperatures and vast winds.
Eagle coach David Needs also sent sprinter Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va.) over to the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational on the weekend where the junior put forth another strong showing. Snead completed the men's 100m dash's finals sector with a second-place finishing time of 10.33 seconds.
The time is a new personal-best for the junior and is the second-fastest time in Carson-Newman program history. A 10.31 second time would have made Snead an automatic qualifier for the second time on the year. The sprinter was the first-ever indoor qualifier in C-N history a few months prior.
After the impressive showing, Snead is now the second-fastest athlete in the event for Division II.
Carson-Newman will hit the track again next weekend at the South Atlantic Conference Meet.
