NEW ORLEANS—Carson-Newman track and field sprinter Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va.) has been named the fastest football playing track athlete in the nation the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released Tuesday afternoon.
The list includes college football players who run track and field at any level regardless of NCAA division or NAIA status.
The Eagle comes in first for the men's 100m dash in front of the likes of Devon Allen from the University of Oregon, Andoree Jackson from the University Southern California and Brendan Langley from Lamar University.
Snead competed at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational on April 9 where the junior finished with a personal-best time of 10.33 seconds in the men's 100 meter dash. The time was good enough for the second-best time in Carson-Newman program history as Snead just missed out on another automatic qualifying bid to the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Snead now ranks as the second-fastest athlete in Division II in the event following the strong showing.
The junior already provisionally qualified in the 100m dash following a 10.56 first-place second time at the Power Sox Invitational on March 19. The sprinter also recorded the fastest 200m dash time in school history at the meet, completing the trial in 21.51 seconds at the same meet.
A week later at the Shorter Invitational on March 26, Snead completed both races with first-place times. The sprinter has four wins and one second-place finish so far into the 2016 outdoor season.
Snead was Carson-Newman's first automatic qualifier in school history during the indoor season as the junior finished 10th in the men's 60m dash at the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. The finish was good enough for an All-American Honor from the USTFCCCA.
The country's fastest football player and track athlete will hit the running surface again at the South Atlantic Conference Championship Meet beginning on April 15.
