C-N athletes wrap up the 121st Penn Relays

Philadelphia, Pa.— Members from the Carson-Newman track and field team wrapped up competition in the 121st Penn Relays Saturday afternoon as Tiana Mills (Chattanooga, Tenn.), T.J. Davis (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.), Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va. ) and Timontrez Eady (Duval County, Fla.) all competed in the prestigious meet over the course of the last three days. 

"It is just an exciting meet to be a part of. To compete in front of 47,000 people is a unique experience and a memorable one for our athletes," coach David Needs said. "I was proud of the effort our guys displayed all weekend and enjoy watching them get better and better."

Mills, Carson-Newman's lone representative on the women's team, competed in the women's triple jump on the meet's opening day on Thursday afternoon. The junior jumped 11.43 meters to finish in 24th-place out of 34 participants.

Junior long jumper Davis and freshman Eady both competed in the men's long jump on the opening day as well. The duo put forth a 10th and 17th place finishes as Davis completed the trial with a 6.94 meter jump and Eady concluded with a 6.80 meter leap in the field that sported 34 athletes.

Davis wrapped up the 2015 Penn Relays with a fifth-place finish of 7.27 meters in the event and has recorded two top-10 markings in each year of competition at the meetings.

Stepp competed in the men's elite high jump which featured multiple Division I powers as well as unattached Olympic hopefuls with a 7th-place marking of 2.08 meters. The sophomore passed the second-highest marking he has set this season in the outdoor campaign.

Carson-Newman's final participant in the meet was the junior sprinter Snead. The Richmond, Va. native qualified for the finals sector in the men's 100m dash on Friday with a sixth-best 10.65 second time. Snead would then false start in the finals round of the event Saturday afternoon to finish the event with a disqualification.   

The first-ever Penn relays were held on April 21, 1895 and it is the longest uninterrupted collegiate track and field meet in the country, as well as being one of the largest. Athletes competed from a wide range of backgrounds including those from their middle school years all the way through college and as Olympic hopefuls.  

Division I programs such as Oregon and the University of Tennessee were present as well as South Atlantic Conference foe Queens (N.C.) from the Division II sector.
