JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The first chapter of the 2019 season for Carson-Newman Track & Field has come to a close at the East Tennessee State Invitational in which the Eagles provided stellar performances for the second-consecutive day.
Last year's South Atlantic Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year Kristofer Potts-Howard, finished second in the long jump after clearing 6.90 meters. James Wilson followed up with another strong event rounding out the top-five after clearing 6.68 meters.
Christian Stumpf collected an eighth-place finish at 6.57 meters which breaks his previous career-best mark by .57. Ray Artybidge was the fourth Eagle in the top-11 after jumping 6.49m.
Stumpf, a native of Johnson City, also finished third in the high jump when he lept 2.00 meters on his first attempt. It's the highest mark for the senior since March of 2017 after being with a hampered with an injury all of last season.
"To see Christian really respond well in his second consecutive meet was awesome," Coach David Needs said." Getting that new personal best mark was huge and we were really pleased with all of those jumpers and what they were able to accomplish."
Devon Moore appeared in the 60m dash final in his first meet of the indoor season collecting a second place finish at 6.88 seconds which sits as a provisional FAT mark. The time was .01 seconds better than his run from yesterday's prelims as he finished runner-up once again to unattached runner Avery Hubbard who came in at 6.84 seconds. Moore's time is 16th in the country.
"For him to be able to run in two events yesterday and his body to respond and run even better today was great to see," Coach Needs said. "The great thing about this weekend as you evaluate is the kids improved. I didn't expect to knock down stellar all-time marks but seeing them develop and transition as athletes was awesome because they did well as a whole."
Amy Zadroga notched third-place in the pole vault for C-N after clearing 3.20 meters on her third attempt only finishing behind vaulters from Appalachian State.
Cameron McKinley topped a new career-best as an Eagle in the one mile run by over five seconds with a time of 4:49.93. He was the highest C-N runner to finish in the event placing at No. 19.
Bekah White (5:45.38) and Skye McCarter (5:45.65) finished 15th and 16th in the same event with Lindsey Williams (5:53.84) and Amy Davidson (5:57.87) following shortly after at 18th and 19th respectively.
Logan Pender finished fourth for the Eagles in the shot put which a toss of 13.59 meters.
C-N will turn their heads to the Finn Pincus Invitational in two weeks from Jan. 25-26 when they head back to Roanoke College in Salem, Va. for the second time this indoor season.
