HICKORY, N.C. - Entering its first outdoor meet of the season, Carson-Newman Track & Field wasted no time making their presence known as Devon Moore already owns the fastest time in the 100-meter dash following day one of the Southside Power & Fitness Invitational at Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Baxley, Ga. turned in a time in the event with a time of 10.46 seconds which earned him the victory. Friday marked his first outdoor race after sitting out last year due to injury. The next closest runner came in at 10.68 seconds from Catawba's Darius Turner.
Tia Davis took home the victory on the women's side with a time of 12.44 seconds. Teammate Amanda Lowe rounded out the top-three sprinters with a time of 12.56 seconds which tied a personal-best mark.
Three of the five C-N men who competed in the event earned the top-three spots with Christian Stumpf taking the title with a throw of 50.99 meters. Trayzel Juredini-Wyche and Ross Ensley collected second and third respectively with distances of 46.50m and 45.07m.
Stumpf was also a sixth-place finisher in the 400-meter dash for Coach David Needs' Eagles with a time of 51.67 seconds.
Luke Greer continues a dominant 2018-19 earning the top spot in the 1500-meter event with a time of 3:57.48. The time for the All-American is a new career-best by over 13 seconds.
The Eagles posted the top-three finishes in the women's 5000-meter run with Rachel Strayer leading the pack at 18:45.34. Bekah White (18:52.46) and Amy Davidson (19:54.30) earned second and third.
Skye McCarter was a seventh-place finisher for the Eagles in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:03.35, a new personal best by over 15 seconds.
Abby Tomkoski took home third-place for C-N in the triple jump after clearing 10.54 meters.
In the men's side of the event, top-three finisher at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships in James Wilson grabbed third after a jump of 13.95 meters.
Sophomore Amy Zadroga earned second-place in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.13 meters.
Ashton Abbott and Faith Long earned the 21st and 22nd spots in the hammer throw but each shattered the previous C-N outdoor record which had stood at 18.02 meters entering the weekend.
"Such a great first day," Needs said. "Our athletes overcame poor weather conditions at the start and really performed well. Extremely pleased with so many strong performances."
Day two of the invitational will continue with the high jump, shot put, and discus at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
