C-N's Moore starts outdoor season with a bang, earns SAC weekly honor

SAC Release

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Following the first outdoor meet of his career as an Eagle, sophomore sprinter Devon Moore was named the South Atlantic Conference Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, March 19 by the league office.

The product from Baxley, Ga. came off an indoor season just a week prior which ended with an All-America performance in the 60-meter dash.

Moore took home the victory in the 100-meter dash on Friday, March 15 at the Lenoir-Rhyne Southside Power & Fitness Invitational after a time of 10.46 seconds. At the time of the run, he held the fastest time in Division II a week into its young season. Following the weekend's events, Moore sits at No. 3 in the country.

"Devon ran very well but the great thing for him is he is motivated to not let this be the high water mark of the season," Coach David Needs said. "His goal is to be on the podium at nationals and he knows that it will take steady improvement. We are very pleased with his strong first step."

After earning second-team All-America in the 60-meter dash following indoors in 2018, Moore did not compete in outdoors due to an injury. He has been an All-Region runner each of the last two seasons.

"Thrilled for Devon to start off his first collegiate outdoor track season in such fine form," Coach Tyler Stepp said. "Coming off of a First Team All-American Indoor season, we had very high expectations, as we believe he will be even better during the outdoor season than the indoor season.

"Being able to transition over from the 60m to the 100m isn't always easy, but Devon did it seamlessly, running a personal best of 10.46, which has a good chance to get him into the NCAA Championships. Being able to do that in cool, soggy conditions leads us to believe he will be able to run significantly faster in the coming weeks."

C-N Track & Field's next meet is slated for March 29-30 at the Montreat Invitational.
