JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman prepares to send four Track and Field student-athletes to the 2019 NCAA National Championships that will take place over the next three days. The Championships will be hosted by the University of Texas A&M University at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas.
Having four athletes represent the Eagles at the Championships is a record for Carson-Newman as the institution has never sent four men to an NCAA Championship meet. Three of the four competing are seniors and will conclude their careers as Eagles this weekend. Luke Greer (Northampton, England) will compete in the 5k and 10k races, Kristofer Potts-Howard (Tullahoma, Tenn.) will compete in the long jump, and Jahvad McDermott (Brooklyn, New York) in the triple. Rounding out the small squad of Eagles is sophomore Devon Moore (Baxley, Ga.) who will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
Kicking off competition for the Eagles on Thursday, May 23 will be Potts-Howard in the long jump at 7:20 p.m. The senior has seen the national stage before as a sophomore where he finished 13th in the event jumping 6.99 meters. This year, with an improved leap of 7.48 meters, Potts-Howard goes into the event seeded at 17th.
Roughly an hour later, Potts-Howard will hand the reigns to Moore who will compete in the 100-meter dash. The sophomore holds the school record for the event at 10.12 seconds which he ran at the Tennessee Relays. That time is also the 12th fastest time in NCAA history.
Concluding Thursday's competition for the Eagles will be Greer with his 10k run at 10:35 p.m. EDT.
Friday (day two) will consist of McDermott competing in the triple jump at 5:45 p.m. With a jump of 15.17 meters, he is seeded 13th in the event. Following shortly after will be Moore running in his second event, the 200-meter dash at 6:50 p.m. This year, his time of 20.87 seconds earned him the 12th fastest time in the country.
The final day, Saturday will once again be a competition day for Moore if he qualifies for the finals of the 100 and 200. They will be at 7:45 p.m. and 8:55 p.m. respectively. Later in the evening, Greer will run his second event, the 5k, at 9:30 p.m. Both Moore and Greer will be looking to repeat as All-Americans after the indoor campaign.
