SALISBURY, N.C. – Led by an 18th-place showing by freshman Lachlan Dickie (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Sara Honaker's 31st-place finish, both Carson-Newman cross country teams finished ninth Saturday morning at the South Atlantic Conference Championships on the campus of Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.
The men's team accumulated 196 points, while the women racked up 232 points.
"Not the results that I hoped for, but I see the improvement from last year," coach Tony Parrilla said. "We are in a conference that is getting much better so we have to step up in our everyday practice and do the little things better than before."
For the men, Dickie's time of 27:25.75 was the 10th-quickest for freshmen. Fellow freshman Luke Greer (Abington, United Kingdom) was the second-quickest male, finishing 29th with a time of 27:58.46.
Junior Patrick Stump (Leesburg, Va.) finished in 46th-place with a time of 28:52.15. Sophomores Nick Guerra (Richardson, Texas) and Joshua Marsh (Orlando, Fla.) finished five spots away from each other as Guerra finished 56th and Marsh placed 60th.
Sophomores Tyler Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Alec Bross (Charlotte, N.C.) placed 66th and 68th respectively. Senior Mark Edwards (Greeneville, Tenn.) rounded out the men's team with a time of 32:56.54, placing him in 79th.
On the women's side, Honaker finished with a time of 20:15.69. Freshman Tori Gaul's (Salisbury, N.C.) return to her hometown resulted in a 36th-place finish.
Juniors Hannah Kiser (Cedar Park, Texas) and Aiyana Martino (Kalispell, Mont.) finished together with Kiser placing 60th and Martino finishing right behind her in 61st. Junior Storyie Miller (Tellico Plains, Tenn.) finished seven spots behind Martino in 68th with a time of 22:17.59.
Freshman Sarah Sharp (Lewis Center, Ohio) placed in 74th with a time of 22:41.04.
