ROCK HILL, S.C. – The South Atlantic Conference office announced the cross country runners of the week and Carson-Newman's Luke Greer (Abington, Northhampton, United Kingdom) took home the honor for the week of September 27.
"I'm really proud to be given this honor," Greer said. "There have been a lot of kids who have been given this honor before me."
This is the first runner of the week award for the senior distance runner. Greer, has won two races during the 2017 season, in both races he set personal records in the five-kilometer and four-mile distance runs.
In the first race of the season Greer won the Tusculum Open with a time of 15:38 and defeated fellow conference rivals Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum. This past weekend the senior runner completed the four-mile course at the Asheville Cross Country Invitational with a time of 20:15.91. Greer defeated five division-one opponents during the race on Saturday.
The United Kingdom native has been the pace runner for the Eagles in the first two events of the season and has guided the team to a third place finish at the Tusculum Open and a seventh place finish at the Asheville Cross Country Invitational.
When asked about his success during the season Greer replied, "I had a really good summer program, the coaches sent us our workouts and I really stuck to it and got the mileage in. I knew that this was an important season for me and that it was time for me to show what I could really do."
Greer is the first runner since Lachlan Dickie to win SAC runner of the week honors. Dickie won the honor twice during the 2015 cross country season.
Greer and the rest of the Eagles will be back in action on Friday October 6, at the Allen and Phyllis Morgan Invitational-Battle at Mossy Creek. The invitational will be the first cross country meet to ever take place on the campus of Carson-Newman.
