Pfeiffer homers four times in 15-3 win over Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Pfeiffer University hit four home runs and scored in six different innings to beat the Carson-Newman Eagles, 15-3, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 17-24, while C-N fall to 17-22.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Friday at Smokies' Park in Kodak, Tenn. against Catawba. The single game begins at 6 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.

The Falcons scored in six straight innings beginning in the top of the second to build a commanding lead, taking advantage of a young Eagle lineup. In all, C-N played 11 underclassmen on the day, including eight freshmen.

John Gray, Preston Lyon, Jesse Dunn, and Eric Shoemaker all homered for the Falcons as PU pounded the Eagles for 17 hits. Gray led the way with four hits on the day.

Starter Ethan Marsh (WP, 6-2) pitched seven solid innings for PU to pick up the win.

The Eagles took advantage of two Pfeiffer errors in the eighth to cut into the Falcons' lead.

Freshman Zac Mercurio (Wellington, Fla.) walked and scored to lead off the inning. A single by freshman Trace Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) would plate Mercurio to give the Eagles their first run.

C-N would add two more on an error by PU third baseman Mike Green to bring around designated hitter Wes Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.), who was hit by a pitch, and Rogers to make it 15-3.

Reliever Mike Mullen (Bradenton, Fla.) pitched a shutout in the game's final two innings and was a bright spots for the Eagles.
