JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 17 Catawba (25-8, 13-5 South Atlantic Conference) swept a pair of seven-run games from Carson-Newman (13-18, 9-9 SAC) 12-5 and 13-6 Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. The Eagles made nine errors between the two games.
The losses are Carson-Newman's 10th and 11th straight – the most consecutive losses in school history.
Zach Long led the Eagles at the plate, going four-for-nine with a pair of RBI. Evan Jurjevic followed suit with a three-for-six day and three RBI.
Game one: Catawba 12, Carson-Newman 5
Catawba jumped out to a 9-0 lead with a crooked number in the first four innings before Carson-Newman's offense picked up. The Eagles outscored the Indians 5-3 over the final five frames, but the damage had been done for Catawba.
Every Indian in the order had a hit save for catcher Danny Parisi who still managed to find his way aboard on an Eagle error. For Indians had multiple hits, led by Cameron Cockman and Ethan Satterfield's three singles. Cockman and four others had multiple RBIs.
Evan Jurjevic was the star at the plate for the Eagles in game one. He entered for an injured Peter Rajkovich in the fifth and proceeded to go three-for-three at the plate with a two-run bomb in the seventh.
Alex Britt took the loss on the hill (3-3). He surrendered nine runs – six earned – in his 3.1 inning outing.
Ross Whitley took the win following a seven-inning, six-K performance.
Game two: Catawba 13, Carson-Newman 6
Three big innings aided the Indians in the 13-6 game two win over the Eagles. A four-run third, a five-run fourth and a three-run fifth had the Indians on their way to a series sweep of C-N.
Keaton Hawks drove in five runs for the Indians on the back of two home runs. Chris Dula also blasted his league leading 12th bomb for a pair of RBI.
Long provided the pop at the plate for the Eagles going three-for-four with two RBI.
Ultimately Carson-Newman's five errors doomed the Eagles. All of the Indians runs in the fourth were unearned.
Dustin Dunagan took the loss after getting the start (0-4), while John Tuttle ran his record to 6-4 after pitching the first four innings. Ryan McClintock picked up a three-inning save to close the game.
The Eagles are back at home Tuesday against Pfeiffer.
