JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Head coach Tom Griffin's baseball team begins the 2014 season with 11 of 16 games away from home beginning with a double-header at Georgia Regents University February 1 as part of a three game series.
"Every year you can look at a schedule and say it's challenging because who knows what we have until we start playing," Griffin said of the slate. "Our conference is going to be very competitive top to bottom. It has gotten stronger each year."
Griffin enters his ninth season at in Mossy Creek and 15th overall as a baseball head coach. With a 242-180 overall record, Griffin is eight wins from 250. The veteran skipper has compiled a record of 107-81 during his tenure with Carson-Newman.
The Eagles will take on three teams that won their conference in 2013 and made the national tournament. South Atlantic Conference champion Lincoln Memorial will visit Jefferson City February 28 and March 1 in a three game series. On March 14 and 15, the Eagles travel to Coker to take on the Conference Carolinas champions. The Cobras lost to eventual national champion Tampa 12-4 after winning the Southeast Regional title. Carson-Newman hosts Peach Belt champion Georgia College March 29 and 30. It was the first national tournament appearance for LMU and Coker while Georgia College played in its 10th.
A three game set against Brevard February 7 and 8 marks the home opener and SAC lidlifter.
"Any conference team that you play at home is always competitive," Griffin said of the SAC. "I think if someone likes good baseball, they will see that with anyone we play in conference-wise."
Carson-Newman plays 12 straight games at the friendly confines from March 29 to April 12 before concluding the season with four of five games at home.
The Eagles will play host to King University on April 2 at 7 p.m. at Smokies Park, home of the Chicago Cubs Double-A affiliate in Kodak, Tenn.
"The kids love it," Griffin said of the experience to play at Smokies Park. "Both teams enjoy it. For the parents and friends that come, it's a unique experience. Every year we have done it, the Smokies have been very gracious to have us there."
