JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in 2014, the Carson-Newman Eagles (10-6) lost at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex as the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (6-10) defeated the Eagles 7-4 Wednesday afternoon.

The Crusaders scored four runs in the top of the third inning off of Eagle starter sophomore Clayton Eames (Hoschton, Ga.) as the visiting group sent ten men to the plate. The first five players reached safely with RBI singles from third basemen Craig Zalewa and catcher Michael Falsetti. A two-RBI single back up the middle by first basemen Weston Clarke make it a 4-0 game.

"It affected everything," head coach Tom Griffin said of the early deficit. "We have been wanting to put more pressure on people. Down 4-0, you really have to play base-to-base and put together some hits. Today, it took us out of what we wanted to do."

With one out in the bottom half of the third frame, senior second basemen Trace Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) drew a six-pitch walk and moved to second base on a ground out. Sophomore designated hitter Joe Tipton (Dandridge, Tenn.) laced a ball into center field to score Rogers and pull the Eagles to a 4-1 deficit.

Belmont Abbey sent eight more batters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning. Falsetti and designated hitter Adam Venditti slapped singles to the outfield to bring home two runs and make it a 6-1 advantage for the road club.

Carson-Newman clawed back in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners first and second base, freshman catcher Greg Jones (Maryville, Tenn.) roped a single into right field that plated sophomore first basemen Shade Jett (Talbott, Tenn.). Freshman third basemen Eric Lynch (Boonton, N.J.) bounced a single into center field that scored a pair of runs on his third hit of the game to make it a 7-4 game. Sophomore Brandon Roberts came to the plate to pinch hit and blooped a ball into center field. Centerfielder Lorenzo Wright and second basemen Kayden Krause ran into each other and the ball bounced toward left fielder Anthony Dimino. Lynch was bolted around third base when he was held at the last second by Griffin. The third basemen injured his leg and could not crawl back to third base prior to being tagged out to end the threat.

The Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning falling at home for the first time this season as the Crusaders earned their first road win of the season.

Eames took the loss as he went three innings and allowed five earned runs on six hits with three walks and a career-high five strikeouts. The Eagles used nine different pitchers and walked a season-high eight batters.

"We did not get into the strike zone soon enough," Griffin said of his hurlers. "There is a bunt situation and we end up walking a guy that wants to give us an out. We have to learn from this. We know what people are capable of doing and have them fight through it."

Lincoln Memorial comes to town this weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday at 2 p.m. Pregame coverage begins at 1:50 on the Eagle Sports Network.
