Carson-Newman Baseball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Winners of six-straight games and nine of its last 10 Carson-Newman hosts Bluefield State Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

Carson-Newman (9-5) finished the month of February with a 9-5 record, a .642 winning percentage. It is the best record in February since the 2008 team went 13-6 (.684). 2008 was the last time that the Eagles qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Carson-Newman and Bluefield State (2-9) will meet on the diamond for the 13th time since 1988 with 2016 being the third-straight season with a meeting.

The Eagles have won each of the last five meetings and are double-digit victors in the last three contests. Cade Snapp (Seymour, Tenn.) went 2-for-3 with seven RBIs and three runs scored becoming the first Eagle since Jeff Lockwood on February 17, 2010 versus Pfeiffer to drive in seven or more runs in a game.

Located in Bluefield, W.V., the college receives federal funding for being a historically black school despite 90 percent of its students being white.

Bluefield St. is in the midst of 16 consecutive road games to begin the year as the Blues play 22 of their first 23 games away from the friendly confines.

The Big Blues participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference that houses 303 member institutions across three divisions of the NCAA with teams ranging from Maine to South Carolina and as far west as Missouri.

The lone wins this season for Bluefield State came on Feb. 27, 10-2 and 5-2 decisions over Clark Atlanta. The Big Blues played a South Atlantic Conference team in Tusculum on Feb. 19 falling by a 6-4 tally.

As a team, the unit is hitting .211 on the year without a home run. Tyler Frazier leads the team with a .385 batting average while Boston New is hitting .346. Chase Chambers leads the team with 11 RBIs on the season.

On the mound, the Big Blues have a cumulative 7.05 earned run average with 58 strikeouts while giving up 94 hits and 61 walks in 75.1 innings.
