Apicella takes home second SAC Pitcher of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior starting pitcher Vince Apicella was named the South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time in 2016 after a complete-game effort at Brevard on Friday the league announced Tuesday morning.

The honor is the fourth time that Apicella has been named the league's pitcher of the week after doing so twice in 2015. The southpaw is one of 10 C-N pitchers to win the award since the league began recording the plaudit in 2006 and moved into sole possession for the most weekly accolades won by a pitcher breaking a tie with Austin Bridgewater who won three times between 2010-11.

Of the six weekly honors given to pitchers this season only two hurlers have won the award with Placido Torres winning four times. With senior third baseman Brandon Roberts (Davie, Fla.) winning the player of the week honor on March 1, Carson-Newman is the only school in the league to win a player and pitcher of the week plaudit.

Apicella worked a complete game for the third time this season while winning his fourth consecutive start to improve to 4-1 on the year against the Tornados on Friday. The southpaw struck out 11, the 10th time in his career with double-digit strikeouts, while yielding one earned run, one walk and five hits. With his ninth strikeout of the game in the seventh inning, the Dillsburg, Pa. native recorded career strikeout No. 200.

On the season, the Dillsubrg, Pa. native is second in the nation with three complete games, third in the country with four wins and sixth at the Division II level with 44 strikeouts.

The Eagles get back between the lines Tuesday afternoon for a 2 p.m. first pitch when the Lee Flames come to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. Pregame coverage begins at 1:50 p.m. with video and audio streams available on cneagles.com/live.
