Carson-Newman Baseball Game Notes
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman welcomes Trevecca Nazerene to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. for its final non-conference game of the regular season.
The two programs are meeting for just the fourth time dating back to the 2014 season. Trevecca Nazerene won the first meeting with the Eagles picking up wins in each of the last two contests.
The most recent contest was the final game of 2015 for the Eagles on April 28 in the Music City, a 4-0 victory. Vince Apicella (Dillsburg, Pa.) tossed a complete-game shutout to match the school record for complete games in a season with his sixth of the year.
The last time the two sides met at Mossy Creek, April 8, 2014, the Eagles won 6-4 as Brandon Timmerman tossed 5.1 scoreless innings of relief allowing just two hits.
The Eagles have won five straight games against teams from the Volunteer State with the last loss coming on March 12, 2015 when Lee picked up a 7-6 victory.
The last time C-N lost to a non-conference team from Tennessee was on Feb. 20, 2013 when King picked up a 12-8 victory. It's also a string of five in-a-row.
Trevecca is 11-3 in April and holds a 14-2 record in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. Kentucky Wesleyan, Trevecca and Alderson Broaddus have combined to lose five league games at the top of the table while the bottom four teams have won just nine games.
Speed is the calling card for the Trojans as they rank sixth nationally with 102 stolen bases while racking up 19 triples on the year, seventh-most in the country. Tyler Tichenor is 18th in the country in stolen bags with 24 to lead the team coupled with his .400 average.
In the field, Trevecca is 222nd in fielding percentage with a .944 clip as a unit leading the team's earned run average to sit at 3.98. The hurlers walk just 2.85 batters per game, 20th in Division II and strike out 8.5 per contest, 30th in the country.
The biggest piece missing from 2015 for the Trojans is the vacancy of Hunter Newman, an All-American last season. Newman finished his final season with a .452 batting average to rank fifth at the Division II level with 18 home runs and 77 RBIs. The Volunteer State native was a 22nd round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals and hit .259 with two home runs and 13 RBIs for Johnson City.
