ROCK HILL, S.C. – Following a strong opening weekend, Brett Langhorne was named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon for the first time in his career.

"I went in there with confidence in my training," Langhorne analyzed. "I didn't try to do too much this weekend – just trying to get a feel for what this weekend is going to be like. I had a good weekend and felt good at the plate."

The Mechiancsville, Va. leads the conference with seven runs batted in, four stolen bases and is tied for the top spot with a pair of home runs. He is also tied for fourth in the league in batting average with a .500 clip.

Overall the Eagles went 2-2 to start the season as Langhorne went 8-for-16 at the plate with three walks launching a pair of homers with seven RBIs and four steals hitting in the lead-off spot for the first time in his career.

"Early in the game I'm trying to get on base," Langhorne said of his new role. "Make something happen on the base paths. Every now and then run into a couple home runs is fine. Being in the lead-off spot is more about getting on base and helping the team win early."

The third baseman started the year by going 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases. The only game of the weekend he did not record a hit came in the nightcap on Friday. He reached base twice via a walk, stole a base and scored twice.

Langhorne finished the series against Limestone by going 2-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored.

The senior saved his best effort for last against Pfeiffer on Saturday evening clubbing two homers with four RBIs and three runs scored. In the bottom of the sixth, Langhorne pulled the group within a run at 10-9 with a solo blast to right field. In a 10-10 game in the last of the seventh, he hit a 2-2 offering over the scoreboard in right field for a three-run dinger to complete the victory.

"I was trying to not do too much," Langhorne said. "I was just trying to hit the ball hard somewhere. Luckily I got two good pitches to hit and I put good swings on them. They went out of the ball park."

Carson-Newman opens the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex this weekend with a three-game series against Virginia-Wise starting on Friday at 2 p.m. All games will be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network starting 15 minutes before first pitch.
