NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Led by its timely hitting and pitching, Carson-Newman clobbered the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans on Tuesday evening by a final of 13-3 at Jackson Field.
The Eagles claimed runs in each of the first five innings on the day which included a six-run second inning.
"We had talked about our training for how we will go about the rest of the year," Coach Tom Griffin stated. "We wanted to kick it up and notch and get back to who we are and what we are. The energy level all the way around, it should be full out and it was good to see that tonight. Our temperament and mentality about each pitch was important each and every pitch."
Brett Langhorne (Mechanicsville, Va.) sent the first pitch of the day off the left field wall for a leadoff triple before being brought home by John Sharpe (Franklin, Tenn.) moments later.
C-N (23-20) used two Trojans errors to stay alive in the second inning which brought Mark Treadway (Friendsville, Tenn.) to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Entering the day, the redshirt-sophomore had just three-RBIs in 15 plate appearances. The designated hitter sent a pitch in the right-center gap that rolled to the wall clearing the bases, as he collected his first triple of 2018.
"I've been working all spring and fall on backside hitting," Treadway explained. "I felt like it was the weakest part of my game so when I saw a fastball on the outside part of the plate and I felt like it was something I could it and it found a gap."
In his next at-bat the following inning, Treadway promptly muscled a 1-2 pitch back up the middle for an RBI-single, driving in a game-high of four.
"Part of this is just waiting for your opportunity," Griffin added. "He's done a good job each and every day continuing to do his work and his training. We worked on some things with his swing and he took advantage of that opportunity. Very happy for him."
Travecca Nazarene (17-21) was held to five hits between the eight C-N pitchers on display at Jackson Field. Ryan Victory collected the victory for Griffin's squad after beginning the day with two shutout innings.
The Eagles chased starter Coleman Wood after just two innings as Wood was tagged for seven runs, just one of which was earned. Reliever Tiger Cox promptly met the lineup when his second pitch of the afternoon was sent over the left field wall by Jordan Griffin, who let loose his fourth long ball of the campaign.
Langhorne reached base for C-N in five of his seven plate appearances, being set down for the first time in the seventh inning. The senior third baseman worked three walks during the evening to go along with two hits. Griffin joined Langhorne as each player scored three runs apiece. The trio of Griffin, Langhorne and Treadway combined for eight runs, six hits and six RBIs.
Griffin's group will prepare for its final regular league series this weekend when they take on the Tusculum Pioneers at Pioneer Park with game one of the series slated for Friday at 6:00 p.m.
