ATLANTA – Carson-Newman third baseman Brett Langhorne was selected in the 10th round, 292nd overall Tuesday evening by the Atlanta Braves in the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"I'm just excited and relieved to hear my name called," Langhorne said. "This is everything I've worked for my entire life and dreamed of since I was a little kid. I want to thank my family, my teammates and coach [Tom] Griffin. If it wasn't for them none of this would have been possible."

The Mechiancsville, Va. native becomes the 19th player in the history of the C-N program and 20th overall selection in a draft that since it started in 1965. He is the seventh player to be taken since the school joined the Division II ranks in 1994.

The third baseman is the first Eagle in 11 years to hear his name called since 2007 when C-N had a pair of players taken. Current Chicago Cub and nine-year big league veteran Steve Cishek was taken as a fifth-round pick of the Florida Marlins and Matt Teague was an eighth-round pick of the San Diego Padres.

Langhorne holds the distinction of the highest drafted position player in the history of the school besting first baseman Samuel Roberts who was taken in the 14th round in the 1975 draft. It is the first time a position player was drafted out of Mossy Creek since middle infielder Travis Hake was taken in the 27th round in the 2000 draft.

As the head man for the Eagles, Griffin watches his third player get taken as he had a pair selected in 2007 while a total of seven have played in big league organizations.

"I am very happy for Brett and his family," Griffin reflected. "He has worked extremely hard, was a great teammate with a great attitude the last two years. He is a first class man on and off the field. I look forward to seeing how he progresses on this level."

After transferring to Jefferson City for the start of his junior season for the 2017 campaign from Tennessee, Langhorne filled the stat sheet missing one game in two seasons. In 101 games, the Mechiancsville, Va. Native posted a .325 batting average with 14 home runs, 75 RBIs, 84 runs scored and 37 stolen bases in 45 attempts.

The left-handed hitter piled up honors in his two season winning a gold glove at third base as a senior while being named an honorable mention All-South Atlantic Conference in both seasons and being named an All-Tournament selection in 2017.

As a junior, he tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 17 while hitting .323 with six long balls and 35 RBIs. After his first month of the season, he posted a .387 batting average with 15 multi-hit games on the season with eight multi-RBI efforts. Langhorne tallied the highest average of any player to get at least 15 at-bats in the SAC Tournament field going 12-for-22, a .545 clip, with a double, a triple, four runs knocked in and seven runs scored.

In 2018, the third baseman led the club in 10 offensive categories finishing with a .327 batting average, eight home runs, 40 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 25 attempts, good for third in the SAC. He had 21 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI efforts.

In the field, the third baseman committed four errors in the final 34 games of the year including one in 19 games in the month of March. He was a part of 14 total double plays on the year and a triple play, the most by a third baseman in the league and tied for 26th in the SAC.

No C-N player had ever been selected by the Braves as Atlanta is the 14th organization to select an Eagle.
