Eagles' Sanders earns SAC Player of the Week honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. – After leading the Eagles in scoring during the season's opening weekend, Carson-Newman's Ishmael Sanders has been named the South Atlantic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Sanders led Carson-Newman to a 1-1 performance at the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge, averaging 24.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in the two games.

In the Eagles' win over Erskine, Sanders scored 26, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in overtime.  He then had a steal-and-score on Erskine's ensuing possession, clinching the victory. Sanders also netted 23 points -- including five three-pointers -- in C-N's loss to King.

A preseason All-SAC selection, Sanders shot 42 percent from the floor for the weekend. He made 6-of-8 two-point attempts and all 10 of his free throw attempts in leading C-N offensively.

Carson-Newman returns to action this weekend in the Dick Campbell Memorial Classic in Jefferson City. The Eagles face Cincinnati Christian College on Friday at 8 p.m. and King College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both games are in Holt Fieldhouse.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Whitley Culler earned SAC Women's Played of the Week honors.
