Benson, Eagles sign Knox West's Carson Brooks for 2012-2013

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's head coach Chuck Benson has signed Knoxville-area standout Carson Brooks for the 2012-2013 basketball season.

Brooks, a standout at West High School, is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound forward that led West to one of its best seasons in school history as a junior. He helped carry his Rebels to a TSSAA State Tournament appearance and a 27-5 record last season, averaging 12.6 points and nine rebounds per game.

"Carson fits the type of student-athlete we want at Carson-Newman in terms of his character, his academic performance, and his basketball abilities," Benson said. "We're excited to have another local, Knoxville-area, east Tennessee signee. He's an intense, intense competitor and will be one of the most physical guys we have when he steps on the floor for his first practice."

Brooks racked up weekly and year-end awards during his junior year. He was named Knoxville News-Sentinel Prep Extra Player of the Week three times during the season, and was also named All-KIL season team.

Brooks will join an Eagle squad that has only one senior and four upperclassmen in 2011-2012.

The Eagles are 2-3 on the season and face Hiawasse College and Ohio State-Mansfield this Friday and Saturday in the LMU/Debusk Classic in Harrogate, Tenn.
