Davis garners second SAC player of the week honor

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Carson-Newman forward Antoine Davis (Rustburg, Va.) is the first men's basketball player to win a SAC Player of the Week award twice this season.

Davis hauled in his second honor by averaging 22 points and five rebounds in Eagle wins over Tusculum and Newberry.

"In both games he delivered points," Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson said. "But he's so much more than that, he brings calm and confidence to the team and become a multidimensional guy with us.  He obviously earned this award and is very deserving."

Davis buried seven of his 10 three-point attempts in the Eagles 98-76 victory over Newberry.  His 27 points against the Wolves are the second highest total of his career.  The seven threes he made are the second most he's made in a game this season.

"My teammates got me in great position," Davis said. "That's what my shots came down to.  This award is more for the team than it is for me.  We all work hard; this week I just got the benefits of it."

The junior is second in the league in scoring at 19.7 points per game.  Davis is second in the league in field goal percentage among players who average more than 15 points per game to teammate Ish Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.). Sanders shoots 51.0 percent from the field, while Davis is at 50.7 percent.

Davis won his first player of the week award in C-N's first week of competition. Davis went for a then season high 23 points in the Eagles 103-73 win Saturday over Knoxville College.  Davis was a rebound away from his third career double-double in the contest with the Bulldogs.

The junior was an identical 9-15 from the floor in the win over Knoxville and a season opening win over Lees-McRae 68-62.

Davis and the rest of the Eagles hit the road for two straight starting Wednesday at Mars Hill at 8 p.m. Pregame coverage begins 15 minutes prior to tip with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network on ESPN Radio 106.3 The Zone (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com.
