C-N looks to rebound at Brevard

C-N Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – When Carson-Newman (6-8, 4-4 South Atlantic Conference) hits the road to the land of the white squirrel Wednesday to take on Brevard (5-9, 3-5 SAC), the Eagles will be trying to bounce back from a loss to Queens while keeping an eight-game win streak against the Tornados alive.

Carson-Newman has not lost to Brevard in eight meetings between the two teams under head coach Chuck Benson, in fact, all but one of the last six meetings between the clubs has been decided by less than 10 points.

"The history of our series really means nothing right now," Benson said. "We've got our unique 2014-15 team and they've got theirs.  They've won back-to-back road conference games at Catawba and Tusculum.  So they've got the hot hand and that's what we've got to contend with."

Carson-Newman's average margin of victory over Brevard on its current eight-game win streak over the Tornados is 15.625 points per game.

The Eagles had the hot hand last year at Boshamer Gym, connecting on 63 percent of their shots in the game and 72 percent in the second half en route to an 89-67 win over BC.

"Stylistically, they are one of, if not the most unique team in our league," Benson said. "They run a Princeton style of offense and a Princeton style of defense.  They roll those two well together.  They'll be very in control and methodical and we'll have to work to limit their productivity."

Brevard is led by forward Darius Moose, who is tied for second in the SAC in scoring at 18.5 points per game.

Trevon Shaw follows suit with more than 15 points per game, together, they are the league's second best scoring one-two punch behind Catawba's KJ Arrington and Jerrin Morrison.

"Their guys are versatile," Benson said. "Moose has gone from a post player to an inside-out threat. And Shaw has just kept exploding after what he did his freshman year. They can both go inside and they can both shoot it."

Carson-Newman has three players in the top five of the league's statistical rankings for field goal percentage. Carson Brooks is second (and 18th in the nation) hitting 60.6 percent of his shots.

Sawyer Williams and Josh Rogers follow in fourth and fifth, having connected on 59.7 and 59.3 percent of their attempts, respectively.

Tipoff from Boshamer Gym Wednesday is set for 8 p.m. with pregame coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starting at 7:45 p.m. with the Appalachian Electric Cooperative Countdown to Tipoff on Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
