Eagles move up spot to ninth in region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – Carson-Newman's men's basketball program has moved up a spot in the Southeast Region rankings to ninth, the NCAA announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles are one of five South Atlantic Conference institutions that appear in the rankings, which will help decide who moves on to the NCAA tournament in March.

This is the final region ranking before seeds are unveiled for the NCAA tournament Sunday evening.

Carson-Newman was ranked 10th in both the first and second installments of the rankings.  The Southeast region is comprised of the SAC, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas. The three tournament champions of those leagues and the top five at-large teams following the conference tournaments qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament in mid-March.

Lincoln Memorial and Queens occupy the top two spots in the rankings.  The SAC also has the bottom three spots with Wingate and Catawba sandwiching C-N in ninth.

The Peach Belt is represented by three schools.  Augusta is third, UNC Pembroke fourth and Columbus State seventh.  Conference Carolinas tallies two schools with Limestone in fifth and Pfeiffer sixth.

Every member of the regional rankings is still playing basketball in their conference tournaments.  Carson-Newman and Newberry square off Wednesday night, as do Catawba and Wingate.

LMU plays host to Tusculum, while Queens hosts Anderson.

Barton plays Limestone in a CC semifinal matchup with Pfeiffer hosting King on the other side.

In the Peach Belt, Augusta, UNCP and Columbus State are all through to the semis.  Columbus State takes on Augusta, while Pembroke plays Lander.
