JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman running back Buck
Wakefield (Drummonds, Tenn.) is featured in the Faces in the Crowd
in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated.
The senior finished with the second-most yards in a single-season
in school history with 1,515 yards. His 21 rushing TDs were also
second in school history. The first-team All-South Atlantic
Conference selection became the first Eagle to eclipse the 300-yard
mark in a single game, and he did so in back-to-back games.
The Drummonds, Tenn. native rushed for 302 yards and two touchdowns
on 19 carries in the Eagles’ 45-7 win over Wingate in late
October. A week later, he went for 332 yards on 31 carries in
C-N’s 70-35 win over Tusculum, part of a perfect 7-0
conference mark in 2009.
In the Tusculum win, Wakefield became the first Eagle with five
rushing touchdowns in a single game. His 137.7 rushing yards per
game is also a C-N record.
Wakefield helped lead the Eagles to an 11-3 season and a national
semifinal appearance, the Eagles’ first in a decade. He also
scored all four of Carson-Newman’s touchdowns in their
season-ending loss at Grand Valley State University.
