JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's JV football team thwarted a two-point conversion to hold off a late charge by the University of the Cumberlands 19-18 Monday afternoon.
Coach Nick Craney furiously called timeout as the Patriots set up for the two-point conversion that could have potentially given the Williamsburg, Ky.-based school the victory.
"We wanted to see their formation," Craney said. "See what they were going to give us. They had just (scored) on that slant. So they came out in that same formation so we figured they were going to do that again. So we sat inside and jumped on it."
Two days after Curt Duncan (Morristown, Tenn.) had a record-setting day by cashing in 17 points for the Eagles against Lenoir-Rhyne; his first cousin Ben Ogle (Greenville, Tenn.) nearly topped him.
The 6-0, 190-pound freshman nailed four field goals and an extra point as the game's MVP. Ogle made field goals from 47, 43, 35 and 21 yards.
The Eagles ground game churned up 283 yards on 38 carries. A couple quarterbacks led the way offensively.
Goose Manning (Chattanooga, Tenn.) rolled off a 64 yards touchdown run to finish with 91 yards on nine carries. Toby Slagle (Sharpsburg, Ga.) followed with seven carries for 55 yards. Jervasse Moss (Newton, Tenn.) averaged more than nine yards a touch with a five-carry, 47-yard day.
The Eagles JV team will battle with the Atlanta Sports Academy Monday at 4 p.m. at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
