JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks has announced that former Harlon Hill Trophy candidate Alex Good will return to Mossy Creek to coach Carson-Newman's quarterbacks as a graduate assistant.
"The most important thing about Alex is the kind of person he is and the impact he has on other people," Sparks said. "He's always had a heart for the Lord. I think that's the number one thing about Alex that he brings to us because he can raise our level again in terms of reaching kids."
A 2009 finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to Division II's national Player of the Year, Good went on led the Eagles his senior year to an 11-3 mark, which included a perfect 7-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference play. Good sent Carson-Newman to a no. 4 national ranking and an appearance in the DII semifinals against Grand Valley State.
"It's an honor and a pleasure to be back here and work with a group of guys that's talented," Good said. "It's important for those guys to be held to a higher standard both on and off the field."
Good's and the Eagles' veer-option offense led the nation in rushing offense that year at 322 yards per game, including 89.2 per game from Good. The Eagles also averaged 458 yards per game in total offense, which ranked 10th nationally.
"This is another opportunity to have an effect on some guys and change their lives," Good said. "That's something I want to hold onto for the rest of my lives."
The Greensboro, N.C. native had the Eagles averaging 43 points per game in SAC play, and rushing for 344.7 yards per game. His team rushed for 500 and 496 yards in back-to-back wins over Brevard and Wingate, respectively.
Good is still the only Carson-Newman quarterback to rush for more than 1,000 yards and pass for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. His senior year he tossed for 1,859 and plowed his way for 1,253 on the ground in addition to rushing for 13 touchdowns and passing for another 19.
The four-year starter was a three-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection, Good led the Eagles to four-consecutive SAC titles, and back-to-back NCAA playoff appearance.
Good holds Carson-Newman's all-time records for passing touchdowns, total offense and passing efficiency. He's in the top five for completions, attempts, yards and completion percentage.
Good makes the transition full time to Carson-Newman after leading the Berlin Adlers to a second place finish and an 11-3 record in the German Football League.
