UNION COUNTY, S.C. – Carson-Newman defensive coordinator and one-time linebacker Mike Clowney has been inducted into the Union County athletic Hall of Fame.
Clowney was a three-sport star at Union High School in the early 1990s. He finished his high school career with more than 100 tackles in each of his final three seasons, en route to earning defensive MVP honors for a North/South All-Star game performance following his senior year.
While playing for Carson-Newman and helping the Eagles to a national title game appearance in 1996, Clowney set C-N's single game record for tackles with a 23-stop performance against Wingate. He also turned in a 19-takedown game against Mars Hill that same year – tied for sixth in C-N's single game annals.
Clowney's 153 tackles from the 1996 season are the third most for a single year in Carson-Newman history and he ranks sixth on the all-time tackles list with 315 for his career. Clowney's 2013 defense has created havoc through the season; the Eagles rank fifth in the nation in turnovers forced with 17.
