JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For a game that was bereft of quarterbacks, Tuesday afternoon's annual Orange v. Blue spring game came down to a battle between signal callers.

Lonnie Williams shed a walking boot 12 hours before kickoff and promptly scored touchdowns on runs of 55 yards and 16 yards to power the Orange team to the 25-14 victory.

Nicky Frizen, his counterpart on the Blue team and a Bearden product, pushed in on a pair of TD runs from two and three yards away.

Those two quarterbacks were the only two Carson-Newman had available with injuries to last year's starter De'Andre Thomas as well as backups Noah Suber, Darvia DuBose and Goose Manning

"Nicky's taken every snap for about a week and Lonnie made the mistake of walking without a limp yesterday. They were just amazing today," Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks said. "They're tough kids and they took some punishment today."

One of the game's subplots boiled down to the coaching staffs.  Mike Turner, Mike Clowney, Aaron Hutsell, Dan Redding, Mac Lambert, John Cryder and Tony Ierulli coached the Orange team as the "old" coaching staff.  Meanwhile, Dino Waites, Alex Good, Nick Reveiz, Zack Fleming, Mike Guertler and Nick Craney coached the Blue team as the young coaching staff.

The young coaches had to do 25 pushups following the game after their defeat.

"That was fun to watch," Sparks said. "I really wanted it to come down to the last play to hear them make their way through that one.  There was good enthusiasm, which came from the kids, and that was a fun way to end the spring session."

Sparks pointed to running back Jacoby Scharklet and transfer Chris Dansby as players who stood out this spring and in the spring game.

"We have no excuse not to prepare ourselves internally for next year because we've heard some incredible people who spoke truth into us this spring," Sparks said. "Right now, I hope we make wise choices for our we want to live life, and I hope we get bigger, faster, stronger in the process.  We also have to pray that we get well physically, some extra bodies would help too."
