The Tight End Surprise

Rachel Harper's Under-the-net Save

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – A pair of Carson-Newman announcers are moving on to the next stage in a national contest to find the best single play-by-play call in 2013-14 thanks to a boatload of votes from Carson-Newman fans.

The Voice of the Eagles Adam Cavalier (Montgomery, W.Va.) and Assistant Director of Athletic Communication Michael Wottreng (Cincinnati, Ohio) two of the eight semifinalists for Stretch Internet's Call of the Year.

"It's incredibly humbling that we have the support that we do here at Carson-Newman," Cavalier said. "To pull in enough votes to get two semifinalists from the same school is insane to me.  It's just a blessing to be here."

Cavalier moves on with his call of James Phillips' 19-yard touchdown catch against Lenoir-Rhyne in the second round of the NCAA playoffs – the first pass to a C-N tight end in, at the time, 464 days.

Wottreng deftly described Rachel Harper's unbelievable under-the-net save for C-N volleyball in a home match at Holt Fieldhouse against Lincoln Memorial.

"I'm so proud of Michael for making the next round," Cavalier said. "He was presented with an exceptionally difficult play, and he handled it with aplomb. It's thrilling to compete alongside him for a national championship."

Wottreng's call and Harper's play were picked up by ESPN and Deadspin.

"Having two calls in the final eight from one school is amazing," Wottreng said. "To be included with this particular award is a great honor. Obviously, all of the thanks goes directly to Rachel Harper and the rest of the volleyball team for a tremendously unique play."

The staff at Stretch Internet – the streaming company Carson-Newman and many other entities partner with to webstream live sporting events – will select three finalists.  The winner will come from those three and be announced later this summer.

Cavalier won the inaugural competition last year with his call of an Ish Sanders' three that gave C-N's men's hoops team a win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
