JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's athletic department will pay homage to 99 student athletes who maintained a 3.25 GPA throughout the 2013-14 academic year.
Those 99 athletes will be recognized in a ceremony Thursday, Aug.28 at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist of Jefferson City.
In the Eagles Scholars inaugural year, Carson-Newman honored 74 student athletes. The 99 who will be honored next week represent a 34 percent increase for the accolade.
Student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher will begin their season with the "Torch of Knowledge" patch attached to their uniforms. The uniform patch will be worn during all athletic competitions except post-season championship games where NCAA regulations dictate uniformity in all team attire.
Of those receiving Eagle Scholar accolades, 40 will do so for a second time.
"Our vision is that we will become the premiere Christian athletics liberal arts program in the southeastern United States," Director of Athletics Allen Morgan said. "For us to do that, we have to win on the field and on the court, and we also have to win in the classroom."
Carson-Newman athletes have a history of academic success. The SAC recognizes all conference athletes with a GPA of 3.30 or higher. Eighty-nine Carson-Newman athletes made the 2013-14 SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, which represents an 11 percent increase from the previous year. The number of Commissioner's Honor Roll recipients has jumped by 27 percent from the 2012 academic year.
The Aug. 28 ceremony is open to the public.
