Better Know The Opponent, Week 6: Brevard

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - This is the fifth in an 11-part series breaking down each of Carson-Newman football's opponents for the 2016 season.  This feature breaks down a team that will be in Division III in 2017.

The 2016 meeting between Carson-Newman and Brevard at Brevard Memorial Stadium will likely be the last between the two programs as the Tornados exit Division II for the Mid-South Conference and Division III competition.

The Eagles will attempt to maintain their unblemished record against Brevard, which is home to white squirrels, Randall Stewart and a national champion cycling program.

Carson-Newman is the only current member of the South Atlantic Conference that the Tornados have yet to defeat in their decade-long stint in the league.

Brevard is coming off a woeful 2015 season that saw the Tornados set a SAC record with 11 losses in one season.  Aside from a 66-0 win over the College of Faith to close the 2014 season, the Tornados have lost 22 straight games against NCAA competition.

BC's last win against DII competition came Nov. 9, 2013 with a 52-33 triumph over Tusculum.

Last year, the Tornados had the fourth worst scoring offense in the country, averaging 9.9 points per game.

With their triple option attack that ran the ball 88 percent of the time, the Tornados managed to gain just 168 yards on the ground per game, a total that ranked second to last in the league.

The good news for Brevard is that much of their offense returns.  Tyler Gregory is back under center for BC.  He led team with 642 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns.

Arvin Berry was the leading rusher with 362 yards and two touchdowns.

Jason Nieradka led the defense with 85 tackles.

Here's some other fun stuff about Brevard.  Brevard is located at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest and has become a noted tourism, retirement and cultural center in western North Carolina. A moderate climate, environmental beauty and cultural activities attract relocators to the area.

Brevard is also known for its white squirrels. There are several theories of how they came to live there, including an overturned carnival truck and an escaped pet breeding with native squirrels.

The Better Know the Opponent series continues July 28 with Newberry.
