VIDEO: Montavious Taylor Interview
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Carson-Newman senior running back Montavious Taylor (Atlanta, Ga.) has garnered offensive player of the week honors from the South Atlantic Conference, the league office announced Monday morning.
Taylor tallied 130 yards on the ground on seven carries in the Eagles' 47-0 win over Brevard. It marks his fifth career 100-yard rushing performance and his second this season.
"It's certainly not an individual award," Taylor said. "The offensive line blocked great, Tyson (Herron) and Derrick (Evans) did a great job reading the offense. Then Jamal (Jones) and Antonio (Wimbush), I consider us as one. You add all of us up, and you've got something."
All 130 of Taylor's yards came in the first half. He carried the ball five times for 77 yards in the first quarter before touching it twice for 53 yards in the second.
Of Taylor's seven carries, five went for at least 10 yards. In the opening stanza, he had rushes of 16, 19, 20 and 14 yards. A 46-yard tote in the second quarter registered as the Eagles' longest play of the day.
The senior's 18.6 yards per carry register as the Eagles' fourth highest average per rush in school history.
The offensive player of the week accolade is the first for an Eagle since Damian Baker won it in week four last year after a 249-yard rushing performance against Mars Hill.
Taylor and the rest of the Eagles will be on display Saturday at Newberry. Kickoff against the Wolves is set for 4 p.m. Pregame coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 3 p.m. with the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
