NEWBERRY, S.C. -  Newberry (6-1, 4-0 South Atlantic  Conference) used a punishing pass rush to down Carson-Newman (3-4, 2-3 SAC) quarterbacks eight times, the most allowed in C-N history, en route to a 34-19 win over the Eagles.

The Eagles allowed 14 tackles for loss on the day, which ties a school record set by Wingate on Oct. 1, 2011.  The eight sacks surpass the record set by Tusculum on Oct. 25, 2013.

C-N Football: C-N @ Newberry Highlights 10-15-16
Oct 15, 2016

"We beat Carson-Newman in so many ways today," Carson-Newman head coach Ken Sparks said. "In the first half, we did absolutely nothing with blocking and tackling at times. We'd have a pretty good half on offense, but were awful on defense. We couldn't block anybody in the second half."

Newberry's Jamarcus Henderson, Jimmy Holmes and Jacquille Oden all had 1.5 sacks.  Four other players split the remaining 3.5 sacks for the Wolves. Oden and Darryl Foster lived in the Eagle backfield with 3.5 and 3.0 tackles for loss, respectively.

Carson-Newman had a gross of 440 yards of total offense, but lost 75 yards on the various negative plays to finish with 365 yards of total offense. Newberry tallied 424 yards of offense, 312 through the air and 112 on the ground.

"We just didn't get it done and that starts with me. I didn't get it done," Sparks said. "You hope that you grow from it, but the bad thing is we're making some of the same mistakes every ballgame."

Carson-Newman Football: Noah Suber Recaps Newberry 10-15-16
Oct 15, 2016

Noah Suber went 11-for-18 for 144 yards and a touchdown in 34-19 loss at Newberry.

Raleigh Yeldell completed 27-of-36 passes for 312 yards, the most yards passing allowed by the Eagles since the opener against Humboldt State.  He hurled touchdowns to four different receivers.  Markell Castle had nine grabs for 114 yards and one of the scores.

When he wasn't under duress, Suber was efficient through the air for  the Eagles.  He was 11-for-18 for 144 yards and a score, the first passing TD for the Eagles since week two.  However, Suber also lost 36 yards on the ground on the eight sacks.

Aaron Seward (Charlotte, N.C.) led the receiving corps with three catches and a career high 94-yard day.

Montavious Taylor represented the Eagles' top rusher with 84 yards on 16 carries.

Carson-Newman Football: Jerry Miclisse Recaps Newberry 10-15-16
Oct 15, 2016

Jerry Miclisse tallies seven tackles as the Eagles defense allows zero points in the second half in a 34-19 loss at Newberry.

The game started exceptionally well for  the Eagles. Antonio Wimbush (Kingslamd, Ga.) hurled a 75-yard halfback pass to Aaron Seward (Charlotte, N.C.) on the first play from  scrimmage to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead 13 seconds into the contest.

After forcing the Wolves off the field with a three-and-out, the Eagles marched down the field on a methodical 15-play, 84-yard drive capped off with a Noah Suber 17-yard touchdown pass to Darvia DuBose (Darlington, S.C.).

"It was exactly what we wanted," Sparks said of the start. "It was the start that we needed, but after that we didn't follow up on it. Our consistency, starting with me, is the name of the game. That's what we've got to get done."

After that, Newberry kicked things into gear.  The Wolves sandwiched an Eagle three—and-out with touchdown passes from Raleigh Yeldell to Baptiste Staggers and Markell Castle.  The Wolves grabbed a 14-13 lead seven seconds into the second quarter.

The Wolves continued to let things rev with another three-and-out defensively.  Newberry drove 59 yards in 10 plays for Cole Watson to grab the third touchdown pass of the day from Yeldell, a five-yard screen to the left.

Carson-Newman finally countered offensively with a 10-play 75-yard drive.  Montavious Taylor (Atlanta, Ga.) took a pitch 17 yards around the left side of the line to get the Eagles within two.

However, Newberry landed the final blow of the first half with an 11-play, 64-yard drive capped with a Braxton Ivery 15-yard TD catch.

Carson-Newman shut the Wolves out in the second half, with the exception of the final play of the game. Suber was sacked in the end zone, fumbled and Joe Blue recovered to set the final margin at 34-19 with triple zeros on the clock.

The Eagles moved the ball in the second half, but started all but one second-half possession inside their five.  C-N's average starting field position was its own nine.

Carson-Newman had three drives stall out inside the Newberry 45, including one that reached the 17 before three straight negative plays backed  the Eagles up for a 49-yard field goal that was pushed wide left.

C-N will try to get back on the winning track Saturday at home against Wingate.  Kickoff with the Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m.  Coverage begins at noon on the Eagle Sports Network on Joy 620 WRJZ-AM, Knoxville, Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live
