JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Coy DeWeese (Elliston, Va.) recovered a fumble on the final play of Carson-Newman's annual spring game to secure a 33-32 win for the defense on a pleasant, sunny afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium.

The contest used a modified scoring system.  The offense could score in the traditional manner with touchdowns, field goals and point after attempts.  The defense got four points for forcing a turnover, three points for a sack, three points for a three-and-out and one point for a tackle-for-loss. It also got five points anytime the offense made a penalty.

"The kids took to today well," head coach Mike Turner said. "The defense might have had more points, but everybody won today.  We've talked about effort and competing all spring.  They got after it today with really great effort.  If we've got great effort and great heart about competing then we've got a chance to be a great football team.

The defense also got a pick six from Jarvis Green (Oviedo, Fla.) and another interception from Sean Spence (Nolensville, Tenn.) to bolster the scoring effort.

Derrick Evans (Macon, Ga.) and Tyler Thackerson (Clinton, Tenn.) took turns quarterbacking the first and second teams.  Both quarterbacks guided the offense to lengthy touchdown drives.  Evans scored on TD runs of six and eight yards.  Thackerson found the end zone from 32 and five yards out.

The Eagles break for offseason conditioning.  C-N will open up camp in August for the first time under first-year head coach Mike Turner.  For offseason updates on the Eagles follow @CNAthletics and @CNFootball on Twitter.
