JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman football's first team defense didn't allow the second team offense past the 50-yard line but once in the second preseason scrimmage of 2017 for the Eagles' program.

C-N head coach Mike Turner was quick to point out the defense's prowess in the second scrimmage 10 days away from gameday.

"I love the way our defense is flying around and making plays," Turner said. "For a defense to fly around like that, they're going to cause some chaos and create some turnovers.  That's what we're looking for."

Defensive tackles Montel Presley (Bushnell, Fla.) and Brian Bembry (Parrish, Fla.) lived in the offensive backfield for much of the scrimmage, creating havoc in both run and passing situations.  That duo, as well as Ross Pryor (Kingwood, Texas) and Jordan Pryce (Spartanburg, S.C.) all made stops behind the line of scrimmage.

The first team offense also had its moments, scoring touchdowns in two of its three series on drives of 80 yards.  Quarterback Derrick Evans (Macon, Ga.) led the ones on their opening possession, capping the drive with a one-yard QB sneak.

"We're not where we need to be," Turner said. "If this was gameday, we'd be in trouble.  However, there were some things they really did well today.  There are also some things that if we're going to be a great football team, we've got some stuff to fix fast.  We did take care of the football today, and we played at a good tempo.  I was proud of that."

The other scoring drive for the first team offense was finished off by Marcus Williams (Apopka, Fla.) when he took a pitch 12 yards around the left side of the line to find paydirt.

The Eagles open the season Aug. 31 against Pikeville at 7 p.m.  Coverage of the contest will be available on the Eagle Sports Network on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
