Second preseason All-America honor comes in for McDowell

Second preseason All-America honor comes in for McDowell

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - For the second time this preseason, Carson-Newman offensive lineman Phillip McDowell (Boiling Springs, S.C.) has been presented All-America honors.

McDowell earns the accolade from D2Football.com.  He is on the second team.  McDowell was also recognized by Lindy's.

An 11-game starter for the Eagles on the offensive line and preseason All-SAC first teamer, McDowell helped pave the way for Carson-Newman's offense to rank second in the league with 409 yards per game gained, including a league-best 275 yards on the ground.

The Eagles ranked in the top 10 nationally in yards rushing. McDowell led Carson-Newman in knockdowns and overall grade in his sophomore season.  McDowell produced a whopping 33 knockdowns on the year, good for the single-season C-N record, including the two highest single-game knockdown marks. McDowell had seven knockdowns in the Eagles' win against Limestone and six against Mars Hill in another C-N victory. He had at least one knockdown in every game for the Eagles.

McDowell and the rest of the Eagles debut Aug. 30 at West Florida. Kickoff against the No. 2 Argonauts is set for 8 p.m.  eastern, 7 p.m. central/local time.  Coverage will begin on the Eagle Sports Network at 7 with the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), Mountain Country 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
