JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Clowney has announced the hiring of Bret Story to be the program's next receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

The move completes Clowney's full-time staff. The hire also reshuffles the Eagles' position coaches. Kevin Day moves from receivers to return to coach the offensive line, while Josh Turner moves from the offensive line to fill Clowney's old role as running backs coach.

"Bret's a guy that I've had a lot of respect for from our time recruiting against one another," Clowney said. "We're excited to bring him in as our next receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.  We'll look forward to what he brings to the table in both elements.  We feel like we've hired someone who not only is a good man, but also an exceptional coach and recruiter."

Story comes to Mossy Creek with a litany of small-college coaching experience.  He's spent the last decade at schools such as Newberry, Missouri Southern State, Angelo State, Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Kentucky Christian.

"I've known and respected Carson-Newman football for a long time having graduated and coached at Newberry," Story said. "Coach Clowney is a great man  in what he stands for and what this program stands for is something I want to be a part of."

He was most recently Kentucky Christian's co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Prior to working with the Knights, Story led the wide receiving corps for the Missouri Southern Lions during his second season after working with Linebackers during his first season. Story coached Kyjuan Tate to 105 tackles, leading the team in that category and earning All-MIAA honors in the process.

He came to Southern after two seasons at Angelo State as the running backs coach.

Prior to ASU, Story was at Great American Conference's Northwestern Oklahoma where he coached quarterbacks.  In 2012, Story helped bring NWOSU quarterback Kyle Jech's career to a record-smashing finish. Jech, a senior and four-year starter, smashed Northwestern's single-season records for most completions (251) and passing yards (2,650), while throwing only four interceptions. In their week two matchup with nationally-ranked CSU-Pueblo, Jech shredded the secondary for a school-record 43 completions.

Prior to Northwestern Story spent a year coaching the defensive line at the Apprentice School in Virginia.

Story started his coaching career at Newberry College (S.C.) in 2010, working with the tight ends and special teams.

The South Carolina native originally found himself on a path toward baseball. He was starting catcher at South Carolina Upstate from 2005-07, then was signed by the Texas Rangers as an undrafted free agent. Story played professionally in the Rangers' organization before shifting his sights back to the gridiron.

With football eligibility remaining, Story returned to the college ranks to play one year at Newberry College.

He graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education with a concentration in Leisure Studies.

Story is a 2003 graduate of Broome High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. He played in the North/South Select game as a catcher, as well as an All-Region choice at quarterback as a senior.
