SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – A 19-shot turnaround propelled the Carson-Newman men's golf team up for spots on the leaderboard as the Eagles moved into a tie for second-place at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate on Monday at the Sevierville Golf Club.
The team's second round score of 275 marked its lowest round score of the 2017-18 campaign thus far. All six Carson-Newman participants improved their scores on the second day, but Tom Forster (Oundle, England) led the charge as he moved from a tie for seventh to the top overall spot in the field.
"One of our best rounds of the year," head coach Randy Wylie said. "When Tom and Jake (Headrick) are both on their game, we are pretty tough.
"The other guys, also, all played well."
Forster shot a seven-under round of 65 on Monday, shaving six strokes off of his opening round score. The sophomore now holds a 136 total at eight-under par. His second round score marks his lowest of the season and the lowest of anyone on the team.
Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.) moved down on the leaderboard from his tie for 11th on Sunday to a tie for 15th. He was one-under on the day, the same scoring he holds for the tournament thus far with a 143 total score.
Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) made a substantial jump up the leaderboard, moving from a tie at 45th after the first round to now sit at a tie for 17th. He improved his first round score of 76 by eight strokes on the second day to sit even with a 144.
Alex Hutson (Newport, Tenn.) was four shots better from the first day to the second as the junior carded a 71 to land him in a tie for 26th, matching his lowest round score of the season. He is now two shots above par with a 146.
Individual Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, Tenn.) leaped 20 spots up the standings for a tie at 54th. He made an astounding 14 stroke turnaround on the second day to go three under par. His round of 69 marks his lowest of the season. The improvement he made now has him heading into the final round with an eight-over score of 152.
Five strokes behind him is Will Hurt (Powell, Tenn.) at a tie for 71st. He shaved 11 shots off of his first round score for a 73 on Monday. He currently sits at +13 with a 157 two-round total.
Eastern Kentucky still sits at the top of the field with a 12-under score of 564. Tied with Carson-Newman at second is Austin Peay, both at seven-under.
Marshall's Alex Weiss moved to second on Monday at seven-under while Eastern Kentucky's Noah Combs and Edvin Lindgren both stay locked at third, six-under par.
Tuesday's tournament finale will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. for one last round of 18 holes on the River Course.
