JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After tying for fifth-place at the Tennessee Senior PGA Professional Championship, Carson-Newman men's golf head coach Randy Wylie has secured a spot in the field for the 30th PGA Senior Professional Championship in late October.
Wylie shot a one-under 143 at the Council Fire Country Club this week to qualify him for the next event. The head man of the C-N program felt comfortable with his play in the event.
"The greens were almost like U.S. Open greens; they were rolling super fast and firm which is typically a tough condition that has become one of my specialties to play on, being able to manage it better than most.," Wylie mentioned. "There were a bunch of great players who weren't able to handle the greens but I was able to handle the difficulty of the green complexes."
In his nine-year professional career, Wylie was a part of the 1997 and 1998 Asian Golf Tour and made the cut for the 1990 and 1997 U.S. Opens. Outside of that period, this marks the first national event at the PGA level that he has qualified for.
The National Senior PGA Championship will take Wylie down to the PGA Golf Club's Wanamaker and Ryder Courses in Port St. Lucie, Florida from October 25-28.
"It's going to be interesting trying to manage my time because my team is going to be my first priority," Wylie mentioned. "This tournament is right after the end of our fall season so I'm just going to have to be smart with my time management.
"There's such a big gap between qualifying and when the event actually takes place, and I'm going to be pretty busy traveling to a lot of great tournaments with my guys. I'll be making them my priority while trying my best to keep my game in shape."
